Fifteen years ago Derrica and Natalie Wilson set out on a mission, to help families of missing people of color find their loved ones. After doing research they found missing person cases of color were not getting the same media attention of their white counterparts. It did not matter if the missing person was five or 55 years old.

They also found the families of missing people of color were, in many cases, not getting the same services from law enforcement. So they combined their talents to create the Black and Missing Foundation. Derrica is a former police officer who has gone on to become a certified human trafficking investigator. Natalie is a public relations expert who represents national clients. Together they guide families of missing persons of color through the process of working with law enforcement, creating social media campaigns and just listening to the pain they are experiencing.

A New Podcast

The numbers are heartbreaking. More than a half a million were reported missing in 2022. Thirty-nine percent were minorities, that translated into 214-thousand persons of color reported missing. Of that number more than 153-thousand, were under the age of 18.

In 2021, BAMFI, released the award winning docu-series Black and Missing on HBO. The partnership with Soledad O’Brien and multiple Emmy winner Geeta Gandbhir, followed Derrica and Natalie as they grappled with several missing person cases.

Now they are following up that series with a new podcast that came out this year, Untold Stories: Black and Missing. Each episode highlights a cold that may not have received the media or law enforcement attention it needed. The series also serves as a platform to educate the public on the growing problem of sex trafficking and on-line predators.

Meet BAMFI Co-Founder Derrica Wilson and Untold Stories Host Joy Sutton in this edition of Sisterhood of the Second Act.
